Evaline (Roberts) Pate Driver

Mrs. James R. DRIVER, widow of one of the best known of the early Jefferson County settlers, died suddenly at her home hear Webb in this county Saturday. She was sitting in a chair at her home when stricken suddenly and died instantly. She was considerably over 80 years of age and her sudden death was believed to have been due to old age.

Since the death of her husband a number of years ago Mrs. DRIVER has made her home with Mrs. PIPER, another widow - the two ladies living alone.

Mrs. PIPER was at the house when Mrs. DRIVER suffered the fatal attack and summoned help from a nearby house, but as death is believed to have been instantaneous there was nothing that could be done.

Mrs. DRIVER was born in this county and has lived here all of her life.

Her maiden name was ROBERTS and she leaves one brother, James ROBERTS now living in Texas.

She was the Aunt of Walter ROBERTS of this city.

She was the second wife of James R. DRIVER and the step-mother of John Merritt DRIVER, the well known orator and author. The funeral is being held this afternoon at Woodlawn.

Ross Hill Column - Aunt Puss DRIVER, widow of the late James DRIVER, died sitting in the chair Saturday at the home of Aunt Mollie PIPER with who she was making her home. It seems from what we learned that Aunt Puss was sick Saturday morning and they called for a physician but she passed on before the doctor had time to get there.

The funeral was held at Webb Church Monday at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Rev. Cal RICHERSON, interment at Odd Fellow Cemetery.

Note:
James R. DRIVER married Mrs. Evalena Pate on October 8, 1860 in Marion County, IL. Evaline ROBERTS married Lewis PATE on May 9, 1851 in Jefferson County, IL.
