James Albert Carpenter

James Albert Carpenter, a retired farmer, died at 5:00 a.m. today at his home on RFD 5, Mt. Vernon, at the age of 87 years, nine months and eight days.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix. The Rev. Ross Partridge of Mt. Vernon will officiate and burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Osborn Funeral Home, where friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

Mr. Carpenter had resided in the Hopewell community for 70 years, except for four years during which he lived in South Dakota.

He owned and operated a threshing machine in South Dakota and returned there every year during the season for 19 years.

He was born in April, 1869, the son of J. F. and Nancy (Elliot) Carpenter.

On February 20, 1898 he was married to Agnes Vaughn, who survives.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Roy of Tallahassee, Fla., and Earl of Peoria; three daughters, Mrs. Cora Ratliff, Mrs. Ruth Johnson and Mrs. Dorothy Williams, all of Mt. Vernon; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.
