Ira Christopher Brookman Takes Own Life Sunday at Home On Liberty Road

Christie Brookman of RFD 4 Mt. Vernon, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital, some time after he swallowed roach powder at his home on the Liberty Road. His age was 44 years, four months and nine days.

A verdict of suicide was returned at an inquiry this morning conducted by Coroner Ben Roeder. Testimony at the inquiry showed that Mr. Brookman had been worried because he was out of work. He was an employee of the Mt. Vernon Car Mfg.Co.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 P. M. Wednesday at Myers Chapel, with the Rev. Ross Partridges officiating, and burial will be at Oakdale cemetery. The body will remain at Myers Chapel, where friends may call after 10 a.m.Tuesday.

Mr. Brookman was born June 21, 1905 in Bluford, the son of Lewis and Etta (Partridge) Brookman. On October 28, 1939 he was married to Nellie Pearl Coberly, who survives. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Jimmie Brookman, two daughters, Mrs. Christina Gregory if Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Ruby Shoenfeld of Newark, N. J.: four brothers, Dolphy of St. Louis, Herald of Mt. Vernon, Donald of Texas and Carl of Pana, Ill. : two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Skinner of Mt. Vernon, and Mrs. Ruby Dippold of Farina, Ill. : four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John H. Brookman.
