Glen Chastain Borden

Glen Chastain, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Borden was born on the 20th day of April 1901, near Hopewell, Mt. Vernon township in Jefferson County, Illinois.

Glen's first school was at Hopewell where he continued to attend till about nine years ago his parents moved to Mt. Vernon and since then have resided in this city.

Glen was a hustling young man and was employed with the Hugh Cole Grocery Company until Mr. Cole sold out his business. Glen being of an industrious disposition soon found employment with the Mt. Vernon Mercantile Company and was to begin work Thursday, November 23rd, but on that morning his lifeless body was found near the hospital with a gunshot wound in his body that caused his death. This mysterious tragedy that caused the death of this young man is unsolved as to the one that fired the shot and only eternity perhaps will reveal it all. Glen was kind in the home and loved by all, and the sudden and mysterious death is regretted by the people of all acquaintance.

The body was tenderly cared for and on Friday at 1 p.m. the funeral was conducted at Hopewell Church by Revs. J. C. Kinison and Charles Ramsden. A large crowd was present. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful. Glen was 21 years, 6 months and 23 days of age.

He leaves to mourn their loss a father, mother, two sisters and three brothers. We would say with the Psalmist "So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom".
