Berthold (Bert) Borden

Berthold (Bert) Borden, 75, 1500 Salem Road, died at 8:50 pm Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Mr. Borden, a former mayor of Mt. Vernon and former member of the Jefferson County Board, was born in Jefferson County April 6, 1907, the son of Harris E. and Viola (Chastain) Borden.

He was married March 25, 1926, in Mt. Vernon to Evelyn Gammon, who died Oct. 4, 1982.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bob (Sharon) Davis, and Barbara White, both of Mt. Vernon; a sister, Mrs. Wilma Nebughr of Cobden; four grandchildren, Donna Martin of Benton, Christie Bond of Okawville, and Laura Valdetich and Lynn Davis of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Borden, in addition to his service as mayor of Mt. Vernon and a member of the county board, also was a charter member of the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club, the first governor of the Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge, a member of the Mt. Vernon Lodge No. 31 AF & AM, the Jefferson County Shrine Club, the Ainad Temple of East St. Louis, the Eastern Star Chapter 233 of Mt. Vernon, the White Shrine of Jerusalem No. 66 and the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Southern Illinois.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a life member of the AMVETS Turner Roehm Post No. 4 and a member of the Patton Commandery No. 69 Knights Templar.

Mr. Borden was a member and deacon of the Logan Street Baptist Church.

Funeral Services for Mr. Borden will be held at 1:30 pm Wednesday at the Hughey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kieth Stanford officiating. Burial will be at Hopewell Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 pm Tuesday.
