"Mugs" Bean

Alfred Arthur "Mugs" Bean, 91, Mt. Vernon, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2008, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

He was born in Jefferson County on Dec. 13, 1916, a son of Franklin Edward and America Angeline (Rightnowar) Bean.

He married Ella Louise Anderson on Feb. 2, 1945, in Clovis, N. M., and she preceded him in death on March 30, 2004.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Mr. Michael Sheets officiating. Interment will follow at West Salem Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.

Members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mugs is survived by a son, Edward Earl Bean and wife Beth of St. Louis, Mo.; three daughters, Betsy Way and husband Ruel of Bartlett, Tenn., Linda McKinney and husband Gary of East Peoria, Mary Ann Morris and husband Virgil of Mt. Vernon; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Smith, Krista Way, Melissa Camaione, Christopher McKinney, Brianna Bean, Kristin Bean, Perry Morris, Jeanine Richardson and Melinda Kuntz; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents; his wife; four brothers, Albert W., Veachel W., Stanton and Gleason Bean; his sister, Clarice Taylor; and one granddaughter, Valerie Morris, preceded him in death.

Mugs served in the Pacific Theater of Operations with the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, worked for 38 years at Bean Standard Service (the last eight years as owner) prior to retirement, was a member of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1376, Turner Roehm AMVETS Post 4, was awarded Senior Saint in 2003 and was a member of Meadowbrook Christian Church.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the The Veterans Memorial at Mt. Vernon Veterans Park or to Meadowbrook Christian Church and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt Vernon, Ill., 62864.
