Sarah Miller Bagwell

Sarah Miller was born in the State of Tennessee, on the 26th day of October, 1835. She came with her parents to Jefferson County, Illinois, when a child. They settled about 3 miles northeast of Mt. Vernon. Here she grew to womanhood, and at the age of 22 she was united in marriage with James Bagwell. She is the last surviving member of a family of 8 children, and has been a resident of Jefferson County over 70 years. Her husband died about ten years ago, since then she has made her home with her nieces. Her last illness was of 5 weeks duration.

She was tenderly cared for at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Wm. Hogue, where she passed away on March 29, 1915 at 12:25 A.M., aged 79 years 5 months and 3 days.

Mrs. Bagwell was converted and joined the Baptist Church at East Salem, when a girl, being a member of that church for years. At the time of her death she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. She was a good religious woman and died very happy singing as long as she had voice the old hymns “Jesus Lover of My Soul” and “Happy Day”, singing the last named a short time before she passed away.

She leaves the following nieces and nephews to mourn their loss; Mrs. Wm. Hogue, Mrs. Laura Shelton, Mrs. Ed Wallis, Mrs. Ora Browder, John W. Perry, Joe and Henry Barefield, Edgar, Elvin and Harmon Miller.

After a short funeral service conducted by Rev. J. C. Kinison, at the home where she died March 29th, at 1:30 P.M., her remains were taken to Hopewell Cemetery for burial.
