Martha Caroline Allen

Mrs. Martha Caroline ALLEN, of 1214 South 12th Street, died at 5:25 p.m. Saturday at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital. Her age was 83 years, three months, and four days. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Old Shiloh Church. The Rev. Garrett PHILLIPS of Louisville, Ill. will conduct the services and burial will be in Hams Grove Cemetery. The body will remain at the Pulley Funeral Home, where friends may call at any time until the funeral hour.

Mrs. ALLEN has been in failing health for the past year. She lived her entire life in Jefferson County. When a young woman she was a school teacher in Elk Prairie Township and taught in a little white school house where the town of Nason now stands. She was a devout Christian.

Mrs. ALLEN was born March 8, 1865 in Elk Prairie Township, the daughter of Benjamin and Jane (THROGMORTON) DALBY.

In 1891 she was married, in Mt. Vernon, to Preston ALLEN who preceded her in death in 1934.

She had been a member of the First Methodist Church since she was a young girl.

Surviving are three sons, Albert of Mt. Vernon, Glenn of Norman, Okla. and Curren of Texarkana, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth SMITH and Mrs. Mary SCRIVNER of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Lotta HARRELSON of Lima, Ohio; two brothers, Grant DALBY of Bonnie and Ben DALBY of Bartonville, Ill.; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and five brothers.
