Walter Adams

Walter ADAMS, 96, of Mt. Vernon and a former Bonnie resident, died at 3:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, at Heritage Woods in Mt. Vernon. He was born in Bonnie on Sept. 17, 1910, the son of James R. and Lucy J. (Arnold) Adams. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Adams was married to Thelma (Farthing) Shelton; she died in 1980. He married Mary (Risley) Strain on May 1, 1985; she survives. Mr. Adams was a member of the Harlan Road Church of God in Mt. Vernon.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Adams of Mt. Vernon; three stepdaughters, Neala Crawford and husband Glen of Bonnie, Dessie Sanders and husband Melvin of Woodlawn, and Jackie Rowley and husband Jim of Mt. Vernon; two stepsons, Jimmie Strain and wife Stella of Bonnie and Tom Strain and wife Pat of Bonnie; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; special friend Vennie Merriman and husband Sam of Moweaqua; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Adams was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; four brothers, Clyde, Troy, Evan and Elic Proctor; and sisters Oma Eubanks, Mertie Ham and an infant sister.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Brother Jason Newell officiating. Burial will be in the Kirk Cemetery in Ina. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight (Saturday) at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of Good Samaritan.
