Clarence Francis "Butch" Adams

Clarence Francis "Butch" Adams, 90, of Winter Haven, Fla., and formerly of Mt. Vernon departed from his earthly home 8:50 a.m. Oct. 24, 2004, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale, Fla. He was employed for many years as a truck driver. When he retired, he was employed for Viking Truck Line and Ace Grocery as a manager.

Mr. Adams was born Jan. 5, 1914, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Bernard and Mary Ethel (Logue) Adams. He was one of seven children. He was raised in Missouri. He met his wife, Mildred Elizabeth (Beacks) Adams, in St. Louis. They were married Oct. 3, 1943, in Mt. Vernon, where they resided until they retired to Frostproof, Fla. Mrs. Adams died Aug. 10, 1993. They had one daughter, Patricia Katherine "Patty" on Aug. 19, 1945.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Old Union Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Everett Lemay will officiate. Those attending the services are asked to go directly to the cemetery on Thursday. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Adams is survived by a daughter, Patricia "Patty" Young Birvis and husband Boz of Lake Wales, Fla.; grandchildren Kevin Carr of Bloomington, Ind., and Julie Carr Gamble and husband Bart of Cincinnati, Ohio; great- grandchildren Nicholas Gamble of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Zachary Gamble of Cincinnati, Ohio; and a niece, Geneva "Darlene" Goggin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Adams was lovingly cared for by his daughter and son-in-law until the very end of his life. Mr. Adams was a member of Fourth Baptist Church in St. Louis, Mo. He was also a member of the Teamsters Local Union No. 50 in Belleville.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale, Fla., and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Hughey Funeral Home, where you may call 242-3348 for obituary information at any time.
