1. DAVID1 TERRY was born 1825 in DeKalb County Georgia, and died 28 Jan 1872 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois Shiloh Township. He married (1) HETHA BOWLING 02 Sep 1852 in Calhoon County Alabama, daughter of MARTIN BOWLING and LOUCINDA. She was born 1832 in Georgia, and died 1862 in Richview, Washington Co. Ill.

He married (2) DELIAH OVERBAY 08 Apr 1866 in Jefferson County, Illinois Shiloh Township, daughter of LEMUEL OVERBAY and SARAH RIDGEWAY. She was born 17 May 1838 in Jefferson Co. Illinois, and died 17 Jan 1881 in Shiloh Township, Jefferson Co. Illinois.

Notes for DAVID TERRY:

DAVID TERRY appears with rank of pvt. on Muster and Descriptive roll of Detachment of U.S. Vols. forwarded for the 44th Reg't Illinois Infantry. Roll dated Chattanooga Tennessee October 5, 1864. He was born in Dekalb Co. Georgia. Age 42 years; occupation Farmer. He enlisted March 31, 1864 in Richview Illinois, for a term of 3 years. He had Dark Eyes, Brown Hair, his Complexion was Dark; He was 5 feet 11 inches tall. He Mustered in March 31, 1864, in Chattanooga Tennessee, Bounty paid was $300.00 and enlisted in Richview, Washington County Illinois district unknown, and assigned to Company I. On November 1, 1864 he was promoted from Private to Corporal. He was Injured according to the Casualty report operations before Nashville December 1, 1864. Nature of Casualty was a Wounded Wrist. It was also reported that David Terry was on duty as Color Guard and did not miss any time from duty because of his injury. Mustered out on September 25, 1865 at Camp Irving Texas. Certificate Number 388169, Records Obtained from the National Archives in Atlanta Georgia for Civil War and Pension Records. In David's enlistment paper work there was a letter to a Mr. Gibson stating; David Terry, Private, Co. I' 44 ' Illinois Vol. [ was enrolled March 31, 1864 at Richview Illinois, Mustered in October 5, 1864 to date from enrollment at Nashville Tennessee for 3 years by Capitan J. W. Chickering, Dist. Cri'd to not stated. Wanted to know David’s whereabouts prior to October 1864, and evidence of prior enlistment? signed William Douglas. reply back from Mr. Gibson states; No record found on record showing this man's where abouts prior to date of Muster into the service.

1850 Fulton Co. Ill Lafayette Township Census has Delilah as a 7 year old child. also listed are: Anderson Overby, Age 50 having property valued at $100.00 and being from Tennessee. Elizabeth age 32 listed as being from Ill. other children listed are: Thomas age 11 yrs. Lemuel age 10 yrs. Shadrack age 2 yrs. and Manuel age 3 months all listed as being from Ill.

I now question the actual year of Delilah birth, as i had estimated it from the information that was on her Death Records in Jefferson Co. Ill. I'm sure this family is related to our Delilah. I believe Anderson was the son of Lemuel Overbay and his first wife. NO PROOF.

APPLICATION FOR DAVID TERRY'S PENSION State of Illinois, County of Jefferson:

On this 22nd day of December A. D. 1879, personally appears before me, Clerk of the County Court, the same being a Court Record with in and for the County and State of for said Delia Terry, age 42 years ,who being duly sworn according to Law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the Pension provided by the Act of Congress granting Pensions to widows. That she is the widow of David Terry, who under the name of David Terry, so she thinks, Mt. Vernon Illinois or near he enrolled the 25th day of march 1864, in the 44th Regiment Co. I of Illinois Volunteer Infantry, for 3 years and during the War was wounded by a Minnie Ball in the Battle of Franklin, in the state of Tennessee, on or about the 1st day of December 1864, while engaged with his Command in the line of duty as a soldier in said battle. Said the Ball entered his Left side in the front coning out near the left side of the spine, from the effects of which the said soldier never recovered. and she believes his Rank to be traceable. he bore at date of discharge the mark of Corporal. or at least was Mustered out of the service of the United States as one. That she was married under the name of Delilah Dickerson to said David Terry on the 8th day of April by the Reverand George W. Allen, at the Co. of Jefferson and the State of Illinois. There being no legal claims to such marriage; that she and her said husband had both been previously married. Hessie Terry, the first wife of the said David Terry having died at the town of Richview, in the County of Washington, and the State of Illinois on or about the_?_ day of April 1862. John L. Dickerson first husband to Delila , died on or about the 3rd day of February 1862 at the city of Rolla, in the State of Missouri, in the service of the United States. That she has to the present remained a widow to David, that the following are the names and dates of birth of all his legitimate children yet living at home, under the age of 16 years at the time of their fathers death. George Thomas Terry born Jan. 28, 1867, Robert Edward Terry born July 3, 1869, Eliza Agnes Terry born July 8, 1872. A child still under age 16 years by David's first wife Hessie is, James Nelson Terry born December 15, 1858 in Calhoon Co. Alabama, That she has not abandoned the support of any of these children. But that they are still under her care and maintenance, that she has not in any manner engaged in nor aided nor abided the Rebellion in the United States, no prior application has been filed so far as to her knowing. That she hereby appoints James M. Pace of Mt. Vernon Illinois her Attorney to promote her claim. That she residence is at the County of Jefferson and the State of Illinois, and that his Post Office address is Mt. Vernon in said Co. and State.

Mrs. Agnes Brown Died last night; Be Buried Thursday

Mrs. Agnes Brown died at 10 o'clock last night at the Court Hotel, 110 North Tenth street.
She was a lifelong resident of Mt. Vernon.
She was born in Jefferson Co. July 19, 1871, and her age at time of death was 63 years and 18 days.
She was a daughter of the late David Terry and wife.
She was united in marriage in 1898 with Wm. Brown formerly a well known Barber of Mt. Vernon.
Mrs. Brown was a Christian woman, and highly respected, and held membership in the First Christian 
Church.
She is survived by her husband and one brother. Robert Terry, Mt. Vernon.
Funeral service will be held in the First Christian Church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
In the absence of the pastor, Rev. Geo. P. Rutledge, the service will be conducted by the Rev. 
Robert Guthrie.
Burial will be held in West Salem.
The body will remain at Myers Chapel, 122 North Tenth Street until the funeral hour.

William died at the Anna State Hospital in Anna Illinois. He was taken back to Mount Vernon Illinois 
to be buried next to his wife Eliza Agnes Brown.

Robert E. Terry was notified this morning of the death of his brother-in-law; 
W. J. Brown, at Anna, Mr. Brown formerly lived in Mt. Vernon. His wife died August 7, 1934.
Funeral arrangements have not been made, but will be announced later.
Mr. Brown was a well known Barber during the time he lived here.

Funeral services for William J. Brown, who died early yesterday at the Anna State Hospital, will 
be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Free Will Baptist Church in this city with Rev. 
Lepton Harpole and Rev. Riley Burton officiating.
Internment will be made at the West Salem Cemetery.
The body will be brought to the home of Robert Terry, a brother - in - law of Mr. Brown tomorrow 
afternoon and will remain there until the funeral hour.
The Terry home is located six miles south of Mt. Vernon on state route 37.
Mr. Brown a prominent Barber in Mt. Vernon until his health failed, was 74 years old. He was married 
to Agnes Terry Sept. 17, 1898, she preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 1934.
Mr. Brown was a faithful member of the Christian Church and the 1.0.0.F lodge.

James Nelson married in Butler Co. Mo. September 29, 1900 to Martha J. Helms he stayed in Mo. Robert E. Terry took his family and moved back to Jefferson Co. They lost one between Pearl and Grover and the other between Clyde and Homer according to the page from the family bible sent to me by my first cousin Dorothy Grigg, daughter of Homer and Annie Johnson Terry. 1900 McClellan Twp. The Nationality of George Thomas Terry was stated to have been Irish and Indian according to the Terry family bible information page which is in the hands of Dorothy Grigg, daughter of Homer Terry, Otis Terry's older brother. It also list all children in order with birth dates. Obituary; May 20, 1934 Mt. Vernon Register News George Thomas Terry George Thomas Terry lived at 405 Jordan Street, he was a lifelong resident. He was born in Jefferson County Jan. 28, 1867 and his age at time of death was 67 years, 3 months and 22 days. He first married Augusta Jane Leach deceased and second Katy L. Benton who survives. Mr. Terry was a member of the Epworth M. E. Church. He held membership in Marion Lodge No. 13, 1. 0. 0. F. Mt. Vernon. Mr. Terry is survived by his widow and five sons, mentioned as surviving brothers of Mrs. Sanders. and two daughters mentioned as her surviving sisters, and one Brother Robert E. Terry Mt. Vernon; one sister Agnes Brown, Mt. Vernon; and two step sons Jasper E. and David A. Benton St. Louis. The body will remain at Myers Chapel. Notes for AUGUSTA JANE AMES LEACH: Unable to find death record for Augusta Jane Leach in the State of Illinois. I finally found the Obituary for Augusta Jane Terry in the Register News Paper, It was a daily news paper published in Mount Vernon Illinois. Mrs. G. T. Terry 1- 16 - 1922 Register News Mrs. Augusta Terry, wife of G. T. Terry who died at eight O’clock this evening was a most highly respected lady with a great host of friends in the ------- of the county which she resided. She had been suffering with diabetes for some time she had been critically ill for only a short time. She was the daughter of James and Sarah Leach and was a native of this county where all her life she spent most of it in McClellan Township. Then finally is well known in McClellan Township Mr. Terry having served as township supervisor and been active in political and business affairs for years. Mrs. Terry who was about sixty years of age was the mother of nine children. Marriage Notes for GEORGE TERRY and AUGUSTA LEACH: On George and Augusta Terry’s' Marriage License Augusta is listed as Augusta James. This is the only document that she is listed as a James. On all of the birth and death certificates that i have found for their children she calls her maiden name as Leach. Sarah Jane Green her mother first married George W. Ames. George disappeared, and a short time before Augusta was born Sarah Jane Green Ames married James H. Leach Marriage information found at IRAD in Carbondale, Illinois States : George T. Terry and Miss Augusta James applied for and received a marriage license on Sept. 24, 1887, They were married Sept. 25, 1887 by W. A. Browder MG. and was returned Sept. 26, 1887 in Jefferson Co. Illinois. The Marriage license should have read Augusta J. Ames. In 1888 the Jefferson Co. Court House in Mt. Vernon was destroyed by a tornado, there fore original documents were very few and far between. I would love to find anybody who might have the original document, and willing to share. TERRY: Double Funeral largely attended: A double funeral was held at Myers funeral Chapel yesterday afternoon for George Thomas Terry and Mrs. Gertrude Sanders, father and daughter, who died within a few hours of each other Sunday. The daughter , as previously stated, died on the receipt of the news that her fathers condition was worse. She was sick at the time. Every inch of available space in the Myers building was occupied at the funeral service, and many who were unable to gain entrance stood outside the building until the service ended. if not the largest crowd which ever assembled at Myers Chapel for a funeral, it was one of the largest. the services were conducted by the Rev. J.H. Burden and Rev. George P. Rutledge. Mrs. Sanders was buried in Oakwood Cemetery and Mr. Terry was buried in West Salem Cemetery. Obituary; May 20, 1934 Mt. Vernon Register News Two Deaths In Same Family In Very Short Time Deeply solicitous as to the condition of her father, George Thomas Terry, who was seriously sick, Mrs. Gertrude Sanders on learning that it had changed for the worse, insisted on attempting to rise from a sick bed to visit him, the effort bringing on a heart attack which resulted in her sudden death. Mrs. Sanders died at 1:10 P.M. Sunday, and the father, the object of her tender love and sympathy followed her in death at 10:45 last night, but a few hours later. A double funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon for father and daughter at 2 o'clock at Myers Chapel, 122 North Street. The service will be conducted by the Rev. J. H. Burden and Rev. Geo. P. Rutledge. Mrs. Sanders will be buried in Oakwood and Mr. Terry in West Salem. Mrs. Sanders died at her home 912 Taylor Avenue, and she had lived 24 years in Mt. Vernon. She was born in Jefferson County March 18, 1888, and her age at time of death was 46 years, 2 month, and 2 days. She was a Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Terry of this city. She is survived by her Husband Harvey A. Sanders and two sons. Harold and Harvey Eugene, at home and her step mother. Five brothers Viz: Grover of Capron, Ill. ; Clyde and Homer of East Alton, Illinois ; Otis of Wolf Lake, Illinois and Thomas of Michigan ; and two sisters, Lucille Terry of East Alton, Illinois ; and Mrs. Aline Grothius of Mt. Vernon. She was a member of the Christian Church. Gertrude's stone says she was born in 1886, other documents that I have states that she was born in 1888. I believe that she was actually born in 1888 as her parents didn't marry until 1887. The 1920 Mount Vernon Illinois Federal Census states that : Harvey A. Sanders Head of Household white Male age 40 was born in Illinois. Gertrude Wife Female white age 31 born in Illinois. Harold E. Son male white age 7/12 born in Illinois May or June 1919. Earnest D. Brother white male age 37 born in Illinois. I estimated Harold E. Sanders birth date from this census as it was taken on Jan. 29, 1920 Notes for HARVEY A. Obituary: September 14, 1945 Mt. Vernon Register News Rites Sunday For Robert E. Terry Funeral services for Robert Edward Terry, who died early yesterday morning at his home, 2501 Casey, will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday at the United Brethren Church. The Rev. Riley Burton and the Rev. Noah Douthit will have charge of the service. Burial will be at West Salem Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the family home after 3 P.M. today. Mr. Terry is survived by his wife, four sons, Thomas E. Terry of Flora; Rufus W. Terry of Benton; Cpl. Harry H. Terry of Camp Hood, Texas, who was a prisoner of war in Germany for four months; Cpl.
