CIRCUIT COURT February 1899

The attorneys of W. H. Clopton, convicted by a jury of unlawfully using $20 of money he found last summer on the Air Line track , argued a motion for a new trial this morning, which motion was overruled and the defendant was sentenced to the Chester penitentiary.

In the case of Marteeny vs. Wirt, for damages for defamation of character, the jury last night rendered a verdict for the defendant. A motion for a new trial was argued and overruled.

The case against the Mt. Vernon Coal Co. was set for trial March 22.

In the case of Atterbury & Farthing vs. F. E. McClane, judgment for $115 was entered against defendant by agreement.

Divorces granted in the cases of Victoria Haag vs. Ora D. Haag; W. D. Ryan vs. Emma Ryan; Laura M. Webber vs. Benjamin Webber.

Addtional divorces granted this afternoon were as follows: Viola A. from B. F. Hamilton; and Elizabeth E. from James A. Smith.

In the case of Laura C. Utley vs. Henry M. Utley the decree was refused and the case dismissed without predudice because the complaintant had not resided in the state the statutory length of time. The parenthetical entries made by the good-looking and susceptible clerk of the court, upon his docket show that had the case been submitted to him the decree would have been granted with alimony.

In the case of Johnson and Roedel, executors, asking for the appointment of a receiver in the estate of S. T. Strattan, deceased, Charles Poole was appointed and this afternoon filed his bond in the sum of $10,000, Dr. A. C. Johnson and R. L. Strattan as surities.
