Jefferson County Illinois
Cemeteries

Many volunteers have worked very hard to provide the researchers
of Jefferson County a listing of Cemeteries and to provide pictures
of headstones to help you in your personal research.

So please do not take the cemetery listings and pictures
that others have worked so hard to provide and add it
to any other website as your own.

Thank You
for understanding and respecting
the work of others.

This Cemetery is located close to what is believed to be the homesite of
Andrew Moore. The front step, 3 corner stones of a cabin and a well were
found close by.
South of homestead 100 yards I found there are 3 graves close together.
I read somewhere that the 3 graves were people who got sick while they were
traveling on the wagon trains. Go south 10 more yards and you find the
one male in a 20" x 20" square. The stone has been worked into a rectangle
with a flat top, sitting in the middle of the square.
Could this be Andrew Moore's head?

This is found about 25 yards from the other 4 graves known as:
Four Graves Cemetery

While it would be most difficult to say with certainty that this is indeed
Andrew Moore's remains it could be possible.

The History of Jefferson County written by William Henry Perrin in 1883 states
that a human skull was found which was identified by Moore's wife by a missing tooth.
His body was never found and it was assumed it was eaten by animals. It also includes
that Moore's wife kept the head with her until her death and though she did move back
to the area for awhile she returned to and died in Equality, IL.
