Millard Allen

Millard Allen was born June 2, 1887, in Union County, Kentucky, the son of John N. and Harriet Bryant Allen. The Allen family came to Illinois in 1820 and settled in Hamilton County. The Bryant family came to Illinois in 1814 before Illi­nois became a state and settled in White County. Harriet was a relative of the Bryants who went to Kentucky with Daniel Boone, whose wife was a Bryant. Millard Allen's mother died when he was just three days old. His father died when Millard was eleven years old. Millard was raised by his uncles Bob and Finis Bryant. On January 19, 1912, in Carmi, IlIinois, he married Hattie Aud, daughter of William and Eliza Jane Satterfield Aud. The Auds came from France and landed in Maryland and then migrated to Nelson County, Kentucky and later to White County. They were French Catholics.

The Satterfields came from France and landed in Maryland then went to Tennessee, and then to White County in 1810. The original log cabin that was built when they came to White County is still standing today.

Millard and Hattie Aud Allen had three daughters. Hazel Bernice, born December 28, 1912, was married to George E. Kirk on April 27, 1929 and they are the parents of six children, four living. Velma Juanita, born March 16, 1916, in Gallatin County, married James Staley and she has one daughter. Wanda Aline, born May 8, 1922, and married Arley Terry. They had two girls then she married Jesse Beasley and they had two boys and two girls.

Millard, Hattie and two youngest daughters came to Mt. Vernon in 1935 and settled in the east part of Mt. Vernon. Millard was a trucker. He hauled coal from the mines of southern Illinois to the people of Mt. Vernon until he was 72 years old. In the mid-40's Hattie ran a novelty shop on South 10th Street.

Hattie died March 3, 1973, and Millard passed away January 6, 1975. They are both buried in Bethel Cemetery.
