Phony Half Dollar Passed in County

Carl Herriman, rural route 4,Mt.Vernon, reported to city police yesterday that a counterfeit half dollar had been passed to him.

Police said the coin was a good imitation.

The married men's ball at the opera house last night was well attended and lasted until early morning hours.

Col. G. W. Evans, at his own expense today cleaned the rubbish and filth from the alley through block 12 and says he will enter complaint against anyone hereafter who uses it for such purposes.

W. C. Blair was notified today that his son-in-law, Tom Kelley is seriously ill with typhoid fever at Tuscaloosa, Ala. where he is coaching the University of Alabama football team.

Hiram Stern, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Stern, residing on Welkins street, who has been away from home the last two years, surprised his parents by walking into the house about seven o'clock this morning.

An adjourned meeting of the council was held last night at which preliminary steps were taken to fill the ditch in the south part of Mt. Vernon.

S. J. Weaver claims to have the largest pumpkin this year. He yesterday wheeled one down town that is 63 1/2 inches around and weighs 62 pounds. It was grown by his son-in-law Joe Laur who resides out of Scheller.

Mrs. Lucille Roth, wife of Calvin Roth and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Wescott of this city, died today at Flint, Mich.

Rally day at the First M. E. Sunday school was a great success with 757 persons in attendance.

The marriage of Miss Bette DAVIS daughter of Mr. and Mrs Taylor DAVIS of Lockport, Il and Albert ADAMS son of Mr and Mrs Clyde ADAMS of Bonnie was announced Sunday.

The wedding took place July 21 in Benton, Missouri and they are making their home near Bonnie.
